Consumers who operated a vehicle in Illinois equipped with a Samsara dual-facing dash camera between Dec. 16, 2016, and June 12, 2025, or Illinois residents who drove such a vehicle outside Illinois during that period, may qualify to submit a claim for a cash payment and receive a year of privacy protection from a class action settlement.

Samsara Inc. has agreed to pay $3.95 million to settle a class action lawsuit alleging violations of the Illinois Biometric Information Privacy Act (BIPA) related to the collection, storage, and use of biometric data through its dash cameras.

Who is eligible for a dash cam settlement payout?

The settlement has two classes:

  • Individuals who operated a vehicle within Illinois between Dec. 16, 2016, and June 12, 2025, that was equipped with a dual-facing Samsara dash camera.
  • Illinois residents who, during the same period, operated such a vehicle outside Illinois

Both classes include employees and independent contractors who drove vehicles with Samsara dual-facing dash cams.

How much is the BIPA class action payment?

Class members can select one or both of the following benefits:

  • Pro rata cash payment: Each claimant can submit to receive a pro rata share of the net settlement fund. Payment amount will be determined by the number of claims filed.
  • Privacy Shield benefit: Class members can also claim one year of free Privacy Shield data privacy protection.

How to claim a class action rebate

To claim a settlement payment and Privacy Shield benefit, class members must submit a claim form by Sept. 29, 2025. Claims can be submitted online or a PDF claim form can be printed and mailed to the settlement administrator.

Required claim information

  • Class Member ID required to submit an online claim. Individuals that believe they are a class member and did not receive a settlement notice can register on the settlement website to receive an ID.
  • Claimants must provide the following information:
    • Name of the company or companies for which you were employed or worked as an independent contractor when operating a vehicle with a Samsara dual-facing dash cam
    • Approximate dates you operated the vehicle

Payout options

  • Electronic payment available only for online claims: PayPal, Venmo, Direct Deposit, Zelle, Virtual Mastercard
  • Check mailed to the address provided

$3.95 Million BIPA settlement fund

The $3,950,000 settlement includes:

  • Settlement administration costs: To be determined
  • Attorneys’ fees: Not to exceed $2,500,000
  • Attorneys' expenses: To be presented to the court for approval
  • Service award to class representative: $5,000
  • Privacy Shield benefit: Cost determined by the number of claims filed
  • Payments to approved claimants: Remaining settlement funds

  • Final approval hearing: Oct. 16, 2025

When is the Samsara dash cam settlement payout date?

Payments will be issued to valid claimants approximately 48 days after the settlement is granted final approval by the court.

Why is there a class action lawsuit and settlement?

This class action lawsuit claimed Samsara Inc. violated the Illinois Biometric Information Privacy Act by collecting, storing, and using biometric data from drivers through its dash cameras without complying with legal requirements.

Samsara denies these allegations but agreed to settle to avoid the expense and risk of continuing litigation.
