Northrop Grumman $75 Million Canoga Park/Winnetka Settlement
Northrop Grumman $75 Million Canoga Park/Winnetka Settlement

Individuals who currently own or previously owned a single-family home or townhome in the Canoga Park or Winnetka area within the designated class area may be eligible to claim thousands of dollars per property from a class action settlement.

Northrop Grumman Corp. and Northrop Grumman Systems Corp. agreed to pay $75 million to resolve a lawsuit alleging their operations led to soil and groundwater contamination, including trichloroethylene and perchloroethylene, in specific neighborhoods. The plaintiffs claim this contamination decreased property values and required vapor-intrusion mitigation.

Who can file a claim?

Class members must meet specific criteria to qualify for the settlement:

  • Current owners: Anyone who owns a single-family home or townhome within the class area as of Aug. 11, 2026
  • Former owners: Anyone who owned a single-family home or townhome within the class area as of July 1, 2024, but sold it before Aug. 11, 2026

The settlement maps the class area and divides it into three geographic sub-areas. The settlement website provides a searchable address list and map to help individuals confirm if the settlement includes their property.

If co-owners jointly own a property, the settlement considers all co-owners class members; however, the settlement administrator will only issue one payment per property. The co-owners must divide the funds among themselves.

In cases where an owner sold the home after July 1, 2024, both the former and current owners may be eligible for separate payments from different portions of the settlement fund.

How much can class members get?

The amount each class member will receive depends on the property's location within the class area and whether the claimant is a current or former owner. The settlement administrator will distribute the net settlement fund after deducting attorneys' fees and costs, service awards and administrative costs.

The estimated payments are as follows:

  • Sub-area A (approx. 789 homes): $21,110 per eligible home
  • Sub-area B (approx. 727 homes): $16,037 per eligible home
  • Sub-area C (approx. 1,778 homes): $7,494 per eligible home
  • Former owners (sold after July 1, 2024): $444 per eligible home

These figures are projections based on current estimates and may change depending on the final number of valid claims, the court's approval of attorneys' fees and costs, and actual administrative expenses.

The settlement allocates $100,000 of the net settlement to former owners who sold their homes after July 1, 2024, and before Aug. 11, 2026. The settlement administrator will distribute the remaining net settlement proceeds among the three sub-areas:

  • Sub-area A: 40% of the remaining net proceeds
  • Sub-area B: 28% of the remaining net proceeds
  • Sub-area C: 32% of the remaining net proceeds

Why is there a class action settlement?

The class action lawsuit alleged operations at the former industrial site at 8020 Deering Ave. caused contamination in the Canoga Park and Winnetka area. The plaintiffs claimed the presence of TCE and PCE in soil and groundwater led to decreased property values and the need for vapor-intrusion mitigation.

Northrop Grumman denied all allegations and liability but reached the settlement to avoid the risks and costs of continued litigation and trial.
