Individuals who received a notice stating the August 2024 Alera Group data breach potentially compromised their private information may be eligible to claim up to $3,500 from a class action settlement.
Alera Group Inc. agreed to pay $2 million to resolve a class action lawsuit alleging a cyberattack affected its systems in August 2024. The lawsuit claims the company failed to adequately protect sensitive personal information, which may have included names, Social Security numbers, dates of birth, addresses, financial and medical data, and other identifiers.
Who can file a claim?
The settlement considers individuals as class members eligible to file a claim if they meet the following criteria:
- They are living individuals residing in the United States.
- They received a notice from Alera Group Inc. indicating the August 2024 data incident may have impacted their private information.
How much can class members get?
Class members may claim one of two types of cash payments and/or enroll in two years of financial data monitoring.
- Cash payment A – Documented losses: Up to $3,500 for actual, documented out-of-pocket losses due to fraud or identity theft as a result of the data incident. The losses must have occurred between July 19, 2024, and June 29, 2026. Eligible expenses include:
- Losses from identity theft or fraud
- Fees for credit reports, credit monitoring or freezing/unfreezing credit
- Costs to replace IDs
- Postage for contacting banks or financial institutions
- Cash payment B – Alternate cash: A one-time payment estimated at $50 for those who do not claim documented losses. The final amount may be higher or lower depending on the number of claims filed.
- Credit monitoring: All class members can also enroll in two years of CyEx Medical Shield Complete, which includes:
- $1 million in medical identity theft insurance
- Monitoring for fraud, high-risk financial transactions, dark web tracking, health care insurance ID exposure, medical record number exposure and unauthorized health savings account spending
If the total value of all claims exceeds $2 million, the settlement administrator will reduce payments proportionally so the total does not exceed the settlement fund.

Class members can file a claim online or download, print and complete a PDF claim form and mail it to the settlement administrator.

Is proof or documentation required to submit a claim?
- To claim reimbursement for documented losses (cash payment A), class members must provide third-party documentation, such as receipts or bank statements, to show their expenses or losses and how they relate to the data incident. Personal certifications or affidavits alone are not sufficient, but class members can include them to provide context for their claim.

Why did this class action settlement happen?
The class action lawsuit alleged a cyberattack affected Alera Group's computer systems in August 2024. The plaintiffs claimed Alera failed to adequately protect private information, resulting in unauthorized access to files containing sensitive data.
While Alera denies any wrongdoing, both sides agreed to settle to avoid the risks and expenses of continued litigation and to provide timely relief to affected individuals.
