On May 5, 2025, The Institute of Culinary Education (ICE) experienced a major data breach when a cybercriminal gained access to certain internal systems and copied files containing sensitive information. The cyberattack was discovered after the institute detected suspicious activity within its network.
An investigation was launched and confirmed that files containing personal information of certain current and former students, as well as other individuals, were compromised. Exposed information included names, Social Security numbers, dates of birth, driver’s license numbers, and U.S. alien registration numbers.
The total number of impacted students has not been released, but is believed to be in the thousands. The breach is considered severe due to the sensitive information accessed, which could be used for identity theft or fraud.
The Institute of Culinary Education has begun notifying affected individuals by mail. The educational organization also published a notice of data event on its website.
In addition to notifying impacted students by mail, the institute has established a dedicated assistance line at 855-291-2584, Monday-Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., EST.
If you believe your personal information may have been compromised in this breach or receive a notice in the mail:
More information about the school can be found at the official Institute of Culinary Education website.
A breach notice means your personal details could be circulating far beyond the organization involved. One practical step is continuous monitoring: services such as Identity Defender (included with an ExpressVPN subscription) can automatically check dark-web markets, flag new credit-file activity, and request removal of your information from data-broker sites.
This kind of “early-warning system” can’t undo a breach, but it can help you spot misuse quickly and limit further exposure. ExpressVPN is offering 61% off, risk-free for 30 days, with ID Theft Insurance included and no extra cost for those who sign up for one or two years.
