
DentaQuest, a dental benefits administrator that is part of Sun Life U.S., disclosed a data breach that affected approximately 2.6 million people in the United States.
The breach was reported to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services on Jan. 6, 2025. DentaQuest has also posted a security update on its website with information about the incident for affected individuals.
According to the company's security update, DentaQuest experienced a cybersecurity incident that involved unauthorized access to a portion of its network. The ransomware group ShinyHunters was reportedly responsible for the attack.
The information exposed as a result of the breach included names, dates of birth, email addresses, genders, government-issued IDs, phone numbers, addresses, and health insurance information.
DentaQuest began conducting an investigation to determine the scope of the incident, including the full nature and extent of any data that may have been compromised. As of the most recent update on June 1, 2026, the investigation remains ongoing.
Despite the breach, DentaQuest said its systems have remained fully operational and that it has continued to serve its clients with limited disruption. The company committed to providing ongoing updates and said it would ensure that clients receive information relevant to their organization as quickly and transparently as possible.
