Rheem Water Heater Drain Valve Class Action Settlement
Rheem Water Heater Drain Valve Class Action Settlement

Individuals who own or previously owned a Rheem water heater or a home or other structure with a Rheem water heater with a round poly drain valve installed may be eligible to submit a claim for up to $1,500 and other benefits from a class action settlement.

Rheem Manufacturing Co. and Melet Plastics Inc. agreed to pay to settle a class action lawsuit for alleged damages related to their round poly drain valves, which the companies sold both independently and as part of water heaters between 2019 and 2023. The plaintiffs claimed the faulty drain valves led to water damage and, in some cases, flooding.

Who can file a claim for a settlement payment?

Class members include homeowners, landlords, property managers and other individuals who meet the following criteria:

  • They own or have owned a Rheem water heater with a round poly drain valve and specific part numbers manufactured and advertised between 2019 and 2023.
  • They own or have owned a home or other structure physically located in the United States in which the Rheem water heater with qualifying drain valve was or is installed.

The settlement website lists the eligible drain valve part numbers. They include:

How much is the class action payout?

Class members have multiple benefit options:

  • Documented loss reimbursement: Class members can claim up to $1,500 for documented losses related to a qualifying Rheem water heater drain valve. This includes costs related to the use, installation or ownership of the water heater.
    • This total benefit is capped at $500,000. The settlement administrator will reduce payments on a pro rata bais if the total number of valid claims exceeds the cap.
  • Two-year automatic parts-only warranty extension: All class members automatically receive a two-year extension of their current parts-only warranty for the class product. They do not need to file a claim to receive this benefit. This warranty only covers parts and does not include labor or service costs.
    • If the original parts warranty has expired, the new two-year warranty begins on the settlement’s effective date.
  • One-year elective parts-and-labor warranty extension: Instead of the two-year parts-only warranty or the replacement brass drain valve, class members may submit a claim to receive a one-year warranty extension covering both parts and labor for Rheem water heaters with a qualifying drain valve. The one-year extension will begin after any existing parts-and-labor warranty expires or on the settlement's effective date.
    • This benefit is limited to the first 100,000 valid claims.
  • Replacement brass drain valve: Class members who do not claim the one-year parts and labor extension can submit to receive a new brass drain valve for their Rheem water heater. Labor for installation is not included with the part.
    • This benefit is limited to the first 20,000 valid claims.

Why is there a class action settlement?

The class action lawsuit alleged Rheem Manufacturing Co. and Melet Plastics Inc. were responsible for damages related to their round poly drain valves, which they sold independently and as part of water heaters between 2019 and 2023. The plaintiffs claimed these valves were defective and caused property damage or other losses.

The defendants denied the allegations but agreed to settle to avoid the uncertainty and expense of continued litigation.
