Google $5M California Play Store Subscription Settlement
Google $5M California Play Store Subscription Settlement

Consumers who paid for at least one Google subscription renewal term through the Google Play store in California between May 30, 2014, and Oct. 27, 2019, may be eligible to claim approximately $5.85 from a class action settlement.

Google LLC agreed to pay $5 million to settle a class action lawsuit alleging it did not comply with California’s automatic renewal law when selling subscriptions through the Google Play store.

Who are the class members?

The settlement considers individuals class members if they meet all of the following criteria:

  • They paid to renew at least one term of a Google subscription through a Google Play checkout screen (or “buy cart”) billed through Google Play billing.
  • They made the payment between May 30, 2014, and Oct. 27, 2019.
  • The subscription was for personal, family or household purposes.

The settlement automatically includes class members unless they choose to exclude themselves by the deadline.

The settlement excludes:

  • Subscriptions for Google Drive
  • Subscriptions the class member canceled during a free trial
  • Subscriptions that Google fully refunded

How much is the Google Play payout?

Pro rata payment: Each class member who does not opt out of the settlement will receive a pro rata share of the net settlement fund after attorneys’ fees and expenses, service awards and settlement administration costs. The estimated payment per class member is about $5.85, but the exact amount will depend on the number of eligible participants and final settlement costs.

No action needed to receive compensation

Class members do not need to submit a claim form to receive their payment. The settlement administrator will use Google’s records to identify eligible class members and automatically distribute Google Pay credits into their account.

If a class member does not have an active Google Play account at the time of distribution, the settlement administrator will send the payment electronically via PayPal or Zelle.

If the administrator cannot send an electronic payment (for example, if there is no valid email address or the payment fails), the settlement administrator will return the value of the payment to the net settlement fund and either redistribute it to other class members or donate it to a court-approved nonprofit.

Why did this class action settlement happen?

The class action alleged Google did not follow all of the disclosure requirements of California’s automatic renewal law when selling subscriptions through the Google Play Store.

Google denied any wrongdoing but agreed to settle to avoid the cost and uncertainty of further litigation.
