Why did this FTC settlement happen?

The lawsuit alleged NGL Labs, also known as Not Gonna Lie, and its cofounders engaged in deceptive practices by sending fake messages to users that appeared to come from real people. The lawsuit also claimed the company misled users into signing up for paid subscriptions by falsely claiming their payments would reveal the message senders' identities.

Additionally, many users allegedly believed they made a one-time payment but instead received recurring weekly fees and charges without their knowledge or consent. The lawsuit claimed NGL Labs often ignored refund requests.

To resolve these allegations, NGL Labs agreed to pay $4.5 million to the FTC, which will issue refunds to impacted consumers and implement changes to its business practices.
