Hyundai Sonata Plug-In Hybrid $1.4M Class Action Settlement
Hyundai Sonata Plug-In Hybrid $1.4M Class Action Settlement

Individuals who owned or leased a 2016–2019 Hyundai Sonata plug-in hybrid that required a high-voltage battery replacement under warranty in which the repair took longer than 60 days may be eligible to submit a claim to receive an estimated $10-$15 per day their vehicle was out of service from a class action settlement.

Hyundai Motor America agreed to pay up to $1,430,000 to settle a class action lawsuit alleging it failed to provide timely high-voltage battery replacements for certain Sonata Plug-In Hybrid vehicles. As a result, some owners and lessees experienced extended periods without the use of their vehicles while waiting for repairs.

Who can file a claim?

Class members must meet the following criteria:

  • They owned or leased a 2016, 2017, 2018 or 2019 Hyundai Sonata plug-in hybrid vehicle. Both current and former owners and lessees are eligible.
  • Their vehicle required a high-voltage battery replacement during the high-voltage battery warranty period.
  • The battery replacement could not be completed within 60 days, resulting in their vehicle being out of service for at least 60 days.

The majority of qualifying vehicles were out of service between late 2021 and summer 2023. Class members can check their eligibility online using the VIN.

Are there any exclusions?

Current or previous owners of a class vehicle deemed a total loss (salvage) are not eligible to submit a claim.

How much are settlement payments?

Cash payment: Class members can submit a claim to receive a $10 cash payment for each day their qualifying vehicle was out of service while waiting for a battery repair. If the total of valid claims is less than $250,000, the payment will increase to $15 per day.

Why did this class action settlement happen?

The class action lawsuit alleged Hyundai Motor America failed to honor the high-voltage battery warranty for certain Sonata Plug-In Hybrid vehicles. The plaintiffs claimed that when the batteries failed, Hyundai could not repair or replace them in a timely manner, resulting in vehicles being out of service for extended periods.

Hyundai denied the allegations, asserting the delays were due to supply chain disruptions and other factors beyond its control, yet agreed to settle to avoid the expense and risk of continued litigation.
