Why did this class action lawsuit and settlement happen?
This class action lawsuit was filed because plaintiffs alleged that Family Dollar deceptively labeled, packaged, and marketed its Chestnut Hill ground coffee products by overstating the number of cups each package could make. The plaintiffs claimed the actual amount of coffee was insufficient to make the stated number of cups when following the brewing instructions.
Family Dollar denies all allegations but agreed to settle to avoid the cost and risk involved with continuing litigation. As part of the settlement, Family Dollar has also agreed to change its labeling practices as part of the settlement.
