What Happened?
On May 8, 2025, Sandhills Medical Foundation discovered it was the victim of a ransomware attack.
The organization secured its network and began an investigation with the help of cybersecurity experts. The investigation revealed that an unauthorized third party, later identified as the INC Ransom group by its dark web posting, accessed the server directly and obtained personal information for select patients.
Sandhills Medical Foundation determined the general scope of the information involved and began an extensive process to identify and notify affected individuals.
A total of 169,017 people in the United States were affected by this breach, including 78,496 in South Carolina and eight in Maine. The types of information exposed in this incident varied by individual but may have included the following:
