What happened?

In April 2025, Pena Briones McDaniel & Co. experienced a ransomware attack. The Akira ransomware group posted about the breach on the dark web on April 15, 2025, stating they had obtained 34 GB of sensitive company and client data.

The firm began notifying affected individuals by mail on Aug. 8, 2025. According to reports the cybersecurity incident impacted at least 4,180 Texas in residents and one in Massachusetts. The total number of affected individuals has not been released.

The data breach was disclosed to the Massachusetts Attorney General's office on Aug. 18, 2025 and the Texas Attorney General on Aug. 19, 2025. The incident was also reported to the Maine Attorney General on Sept. 16, 2025.
