About National Boat Owners Association
The National Boat Owners Association, commonly referred to as NBOA, operates as one of the largest marine insurance agencies in the country.
Founded in 1984 and headquartered in Sarasota, Florida, NBOA works with several insurance carriers to provide coverage for a range of watercraft, including jet skis, yachts and power boats.
What Happened?
Between mid-May 2025 and early June 2025, the National Boat Owners Association’s network was accessed, during which the acquisition of personally identifiable information may have occurred. The company discovered the unauthorized actor on June 6, 2025.
A cyber forensics investigation determined that the INC Ransomware group was responsible for the attack, which reportedly occurred through a compromise of one of NBOA’s managed service providers.
NBOA reported the breach to law enforcement and took steps to contain the incident, including terminating the services of the affected provider and engaging a forensic firm to investigate.
They also reported the incident to the attorneys general offices of Maine and Vermont, and the Massachusetts Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation on January 21, 2026, and January 22, 2026. Written notices were sent to affected individuals on January 21, 2026.
The breach affected an estimated 3,580 people in the United States, including 154 residents of Massachusetts and 15 residents of Maine.
The breach resulted in the exposure of sensitive consumer information. According to the filed notices, the following types of information were compromised:
Information Exposed:
