About ADT
ADT Inc. is a security and investigations company that has been in operation since 1874. The company provides electronic security, fire protection, alarm monitoring, and smart home solutions for both residential and small business customers.
The company operates more than 150 locations and offers a range of services, including 24/7 professional monitoring, smart home automation, and partnerships with technology leaders.
What Happened?
In April 2026, ADT became aware of unauthorized access to certain cloud-based environments.
The hacking group known as ShinyHunters claimed responsibility for the breach, which involved a ransomware attack. According to reports, the attackers gained access by compromising an employee’s Okta single sign-on account using a voice phishing (vishing) attack. This allowed them to steal data from ADT’s Salesforce instance.
The breach affected approximately 5.5 million unique accounts. ShinyHunters later leaked an 11GB archive of stolen data on a dark web site after failing to extort the company.
ADT confirmed the breach on April 20, 2026, and has since notified law enforcement and engaged third-party cybersecurity experts.
