Steps to take if your information was exposed

  • Place a fraud alert on your credit file. Contact one of the three major credit bureaus, Equifax at 1-800-525-6285, Experian at 1-888-397-3742 or TransUnion at 1-800-680-7289, and that bureau will notify the other two.
  • Consider placing a credit freeze. A credit freeze prevents new accounts from being opened in your name and is free to place and lift with each of the three major credit bureaus.
  • Request and review your free credit reports. Visit AnnualCreditReport.com to check your reports from Equifax, Experian and TransUnion for any accounts or inquiries you do not recognize.
  • Monitor your financial accounts closely. Review bank and credit card statements regularly for any unauthorized charges or withdrawals, and report suspicious activity to your financial institution right away.
  • File your tax return early. Submitting your tax return as soon as possible each year can help prevent someone from using your Social Security number to file a fraudulent return and claim your refund.
  • Be cautious of phishing attempts. Scammers may send emails, make phone calls or send text messages that reference the Steel Warehouse data breach by name to try to trick recipients into sharing more personal information.
