SMC Data Breach Exposes Social Security Numbers and Driver's License Numbers

Smith-Midland Corp., based in Midland, Virginia, disclosed a data breach involving unauthorized access to files within the company's network. The files contained a broad range of sensitive personal information.

SMC began notifying affected consumers on Aug. 3, 2026. The company disclosed the incident to the Massachusetts Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation and posted a notice about the incident on its website.

On Jan. 15, 2025, Smith-Midland Corp. became aware of suspicious activity within its network. The company began an investigation to determine the nature and scope of the incident.

Through its investigation, the company determined that certain files within its network had been accessed and acquired by an unknown actor. The files contained information relating to individuals associated with the organization.

SMC then initiated a thorough review of the data contained within the affected files. The purpose of this review was to identify the specific types of information that were potentially impacted and to determine which individuals were involved.

The types of personal information that may have been exposed included names, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, driver's license numbers, state identification numbers, taxpayer identification numbers, financial account information, medical information and health insurance information.

SMC's response to the breach

SMC is offering affected individuals 24 months of complimentary credit monitoring and identity protection services through Experian IdentityWorks. The membership includes an Experian credit report at signup, daily credit reports for online members, active credit monitoring of the individual's Experian file for indicators of fraud, identity restoration support and $1 million in identity theft insurance.

To enroll, affected individuals should visit the Experian IdentityWorks website and enter the activation code included in their notification letter. The enrollment deadline is Oct. 31, 2026.
