Opportune Data Breach Exposes Social Security Numbers

Opportune LLP, a Houston-based global business advisory firm focused on the energy industry, disclosed a data breach that exposed sensitive personal information of consumers.

The breach was reported to the Vermont Attorney General on Sept. 18, 2026, identifying 56 Vermont residents as affected.

A ransomware group known as Chaos claimed responsibility for the attack. On July 8, 2026, the group posted a claim on the dark web using the Tor network.

In its dark web posting, the Chaos group claimed to have obtained 750 gigabytes of data from Opportune LLP.

The specific dates when the attackers first accessed the company's computer systems have not been included in the available disclosures. It is also not publicly known when Opportune LLP first discovered the breach or how the intrusion was initially detected.

The personal information confirmed as exposed in the breach included Social Security numbers.
