Suede Data Breach Exposes Social Security Numbers

Suede, a nationwide credit card processing company formerly known as Merchant Industry LLC, disclosed a data breach in June 2026 that may have exposed consumers' personal information.

On June 3, 2026, Suede identified suspicious activity related to one of its systems. Upon detecting the activity, the company began working to contain the situation and launched an investigation to understand the nature and scope of the incident.

The investigation determined that an unauthorized third party gained access to Suede's system on June 3, 2026. During the access, the unauthorized party potentially accessed and copied certain files from the company's system.

Suede then conducted a detailed review of the affected data to determine whose information was contained in the potentially compromised files. The review was completed on July 27, 2026.

The company stated that the unauthorized access was limited to Suede's own systems.

The types of personally identifiable information exposed in the breach included names and Social Security numbers.

The breach was disclosed to the Massachusetts Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation on Sept. 11, 2026. Suede began sending notification letters to affected individuals on Sept. 10, 2026.

Suede's response to the breach

Suede is offering affected individuals 24 months of complimentary credit monitoring and identity theft protection services through Cyberscout, a TransUnion company.

To enroll, individuals must visit the Cyberscout activation page and enter the unique code provided in their notification letter. Enrollment must be completed within 90 days of the date of the notification letter.
