Steps to take if your information was exposed
- Place a fraud alert or credit freeze with all three credit bureaus. Contact Equifax at 1-800-525-6285, Experian at 1-888-397-3742 and TransUnion at 1-800-680-7289 to help prevent unauthorized accounts from being opened in your name.
- Request and review your credit reports. Free copies from all three bureaus are available at AnnualCreditReport.com and should be checked for any unfamiliar accounts, inquiries or addresses.
- Monitor bank accounts and credit card statements for unauthorized activity. Report any suspicious charges or withdrawals to your financial institution immediately so they can take steps to secure your accounts.
- Contact your state Department of Motor Vehicles about your driver's license. If your driver's license number was exposed, ask about obtaining a replacement with a new number or placing a fraud flag on your record.
- Report identity theft or get help at IdentityTheft.gov. The Federal Trade Commission's website offers step-by-step guidance and a personalized recovery plan for individuals whose personal information has been misused.
