Gerber Life Insurance Company Discloses April 2023 Data Breach

The April 2023 Data Breach

On December 28, 2023, WebTPA Employer Services, LLC, which provides administrative services to insurance companies including Gerber Life Insurance Company, detected suspicious activity on its network. This prompted an immediate investigation with the assistance of cybersecurity experts and notification to federal law enforcement. It was determined that an unauthorized actor accessed and potentially obtained personal information from April 18 to April 23, 2023. Gerber Life was informed of the incident and the potential exposure of client information on March 27, 2024.

Gerber Life Insurance Company's Response

In response to the breach, WebTPA has taken significant steps to enhance the security of its systems. These measures include deploying additional security tools and protocols with the guidance of third-party cybersecurity experts. Moreover, WebTPA is offering two years of complimentary identity monitoring services through Kroll, which includes credit monitoring, fraud consultation, and identity theft restoration services. Affected individuals are advised to activate these services by following the instructions provided in the notice.

Steps to Take if You Are Affected

If you believe your information was compromised in this breach, it is crucial to remain vigilant by monitoring your financial accounts and credit reports for any unusual activity. Consider the following actions:

  • Activate the complimentary identity monitoring services offered by WebTPA.
  • Review your credit reports regularly. You can obtain a free copy of your credit report annually from each of the three major credit reporting agencies at AnnualCreditReport.com.
  • Place a fraud alert on your credit files, which makes it harder for identity thieves to open accounts in your name.
  • Consider a security freeze on your credit reports, which prevents creditors from accessing your credit report entirely.
  • Report any suspicious activity to the relevant financial institutions and law enforcement agencies.

For more detailed instructions and additional resources, please refer to the full notice provided by WebTPA.
