On November 4, 2024, Freddie Mac, officially known as the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation, experienced a data breach that exposed sensitive consumer information. The breach led to the exposure of personal data, including Social Security numbers. However, the full extent of the information types exposed remains unspecified.

The breach was disclosed to the Massachusetts Attorney General's office on February 19, 2025. You can view the official disclosure on the Massachusetts Attorney General's website.

Freddie Mac's Response

In response to the data breach, Freddie Mac has taken steps to mitigate potential harm to those affected. The company is offering complimentary access to Experian IdentityWorksSM for 24 months. This service provides identity monitoring and restoration support. Affected individuals are encouraged to enroll in this service by visiting Experian's enrollment page and using their provided activation code.

Freddie Mac advises those impacted to remain vigilant by monitoring their credit reports and considering placing a security freeze on their credit files to prevent unauthorized access. For further assistance, affected consumers can contact Experian’s customer care team at (833) 931-7577.

Protect Your Data

A breach notice means your personal details could be circulating far beyond the organization involved. One practical step is continuous monitoring: services such as Identity Defender (included with an ExpressVPN subscription) can automatically check dark-web markets, flag new credit-file activity, and request removal of your information from data-broker sites.

This kind of “early-warning system” can’t undo a breach, but it can help you spot misuse quickly and limit further exposure. ExpressVPN is offering 61% off, risk-free for 30 days, with ID Theft Insurance included and no extra cost for those who sign up for one or two years.
