On Aug. 14, 2025, a significant data breach involving Artisans' Bank was discovered after Marquis Software Solutions Inc., a vendor providing digital and physical marketing and communications services, detected suspicious activity on its network.

Marquis determined it had been the victim of a ransomware attack. The unauthorized access was traced to their SonicWall firewall, which allowed a third party to infiltrate Marquis’ systems and potentially acquire files containing sensitive customer data.

The breach was severe in both its method and scope. Marquis’ forensic investigation revealed that the attacker may have accessed files with personal information belonging to customers of several financial institutions, including Artisans' Bank.

The exposed data resulting from the Marquis data breach included names, addresses, phone numbers, Social Security numbers, dates of birth, email addresses, financial account information, health insurance information and medical information. This means both personally identifiable information (PII) and protected health information (PHI) were potentially compromised.

The incident affected at least 38 customers banking with Artisans' Bank in Massachusetts, as reported in a disclosure to the Massachusetts Attorney General’s office on Dec. 23, 2025.

Artisans' Bank's response

After discovering the breach, Marquis immediately launched an investigation and engaged cybersecurity experts through legal counsel. Federal law enforcement was also notified. Marquis, working in coordination with Artisans' Bank and other affected business customers, conducted a thorough review of the files that may have been accessed.
