
Advanced Power Services (NA) LLC, a privately owned energy company based in Boston, disclosed a data breach that exposed sensitive personal and financial information after an unauthorized party accessed a portion of its computer network in 2025.
The breach was reported to the Massachusetts Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation and Vermont Attorney General starting on Aug. 17, 2026.
Advanced Power Services detected suspicious activity in a portion of its network on Nov. 12, 2025. An investigation was launched to determine the nature and scope of the unauthorized activity.
The investigation determined that an unauthorized third party had gained access to a portion of the company's network during a period spanning from August to November 2025. During those months, the intruder was able to access files stored on the compromised portion of the network.
A review of those files confirmed that they contained personal information belonging to a number of individuals.
On Dec. 5, 2025, the ransomware group known as Akira claimed responsibility for the attack on the Tor network. Akira stated it had obtained 51 gigabytes of the company's confidential data, including employee personal records, financial information, contracts, agreements and non-disclosure agreements.
The types of personal information exposed in the breach included Social Security numbers, driver's license information, credit and debit account information, financial account numbers, financial account codes and government identification numbers.
Advanced Power Services is offering affected individuals free identity-theft-protection services through Experian IdentityWorks. Individuals who received a notification letter can enroll online using the activation code provided in their letter.
Individuals who prefer to enroll by phone can contact Experian at 833-931-7577. The deadline to enroll is Sept. 30, 2026.
The company encouraged affected individuals to remain vigilant for any signs of unauthorized financial activity. The company also provided a list of additional resources and protective steps in the notification letter.
