University of Phoenix $8.75 Million Pixel Privacy Settlement

Individuals who enrolled at the University of Phoenix at any time from April 1, 2023, to Oct. 6, 2026, or from April 1, 2020, to Oct. 6, 2026, may be eligible to claim a $25 cash payment from a class action settlement.

The University of Phoenix agreed to pay $8.75 million to settle a class action lawsuit alleging it improperly disclosed students’ personally identifiable information to Meta Platforms Inc. and other third parties without consent in violation of several privacy laws.

Who can file a claim?

The settlement class includes:

  • All individuals in the United States who enrolled at the University of Phoenix from April 1, 2023, through Oct. 6, 2026
  • All individuals in Illinois who enrolled at the University of Phoenix from April 1, 2020, through Oct. 6, 2026

How much can class members get?

Each qualifying class member can receive a cash payment of $25. If the total amount of valid claims exceeds the maximum settlement fund of $8.75 million, the settlement administrator will distribute payments on a pro rata basis, and each claimant will receive a proportionally reduced amount.

How to claim a settlement payment

To receive a payment, class members must submit an online claim form or print and complete the PDF claim form and mail it to the settlement administrator.

$8.75 million settlement fund breakdown

The $8,750,000 settlement fund includes:

  • Attorneys’ fees and expenses: Up to $3,062,500
  • Service awards to class representatives: Up to $5,000 each ($10,000 total)
  • Payments to eligible class members: Remainder of the fund

When is the University of Phoenix settlement payout date?

The settlement administrator will issue payments approximately 30 days after the court resolves any appeals and grants final approval of the settlement.

Why did this class action settlement happen?

The class action lawsuit alleged the University of Phoenix disclosed students’ personally identifiable information to Meta Platforms and other third parties without consent, potentially violating the Video Privacy Protection Act, the Electronic Communications and Privacy Act and the Illinois Eavesdropping Act.

The university denied any wrongdoing but agreed to settle to avoid the uncertainty and expense of continued litigation.
