If you purchased or leased a Mazda2 (2016–2022), Mazda3 (2014–2018), Mazda6 (2016–2021), CX-3 (2016–2021), CX-5 (2016–2020), CX-9 (2016–2020), or MX-5 (2016–2023) in the United States or its territories, you may be eligible to submit a claim for reimbursement for out-of-pocket expenses or receive a 24-month warranty extension from a class action settlement.

Mazda Motor of America, Inc. has agreed to pay for benefits to resolve a class action lawsuit regarding alleged defects in the Mazda Connect Infotainment system. The lawsuit claims that certain Mazda vehicles were equipped with infotainment systems that could freeze, reboot, become non-responsive, or otherwise malfunction.

Who is eligible for a Mazda defect payout?

You are a class member if:

  • You reside in the United States or its territories and currently own or lease, or previously owned or leased, one of the following vehicles:
    • Mazda2 (model years 2016–2022)
    • Mazda3 (model years 2014–2018)
    • Mazda6 (model years 2016–2021)
    • Mazda CX-3 (model years 2016–2021)
    • Mazda CX-5 (model years 2016–2020)
    • Mazda CX-9 (model years 2016–2020)
    • Mazda MX-5 (model years 2016–2023)

The settlement website has a VIN lookup tool available for potential class members to determine if your vehicle is included in the settlement.

Are there any exclusions from the settlement?

If you own a Mazda3 (2014–2018) 5-door hatchback or Mazda CX-3 (2016–2021) that was covered by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Recall 23V-487 (July 14, 2023), you are not eligible for reimbursement for rear-view camera repairs or replacements.

How much is the class action settlement payment?

Class members may receive two types of benefits:

  • Limited Warranty Extension (LWE):
    • All current owners or lessees of qualifying Mazda vehicles will receive a 24-month extension of the warranty for the Mazda Connect system. This extension covers software updates and, if necessary, repair or replacement of the Connectivity Master Unit (CMU). There is no mileage limitation during the extension period.
    • The warranty applies to vehicles both within and outside the original 3-year/36,000-mile New Vehicle Limited Warranty (NVLW) as of February 17, 2025. For vehicles still covered by the NVLW on that date, the extension begins when the NVLW expires. For vehicles with expired NVLW, the extension starts from February 17, 2025.
    • The warranty extension is fully transferable during the 24-month period.
  • Reimbursement for Out-of-Pocket Expenses: Class members can claim reimbursement for certain out-of-pocket expenses.
    • Software updates for Mazda Connect
    • Repair or replacement of the CMU
    • SD card repair or replacement
    • Display repair or replacement
    • Rear-view camera repair or replacement
  • If the repair was performed at an Authorized Mazda Dealer, you may be eligible for full reimbursement of the amount you paid.
  • If the repair was performed at an independent repair facility, reimbursement is available only if:
    • Verified Mazda OEM parts were used
    • Labor costs did not exceed the then-current Mazda national warranty labor rate for the approved repair time
    • The total reimbursement is capped at $1,750 per vehicle

Why did this Mazda defect class action lawsuit happen?

The lawsuit alleged that the Mazda Connect Infotainment system in certain Mazda vehicles was prone to malfunctions, such as freezing, rebooting, and other technical issues. Mazda denied these claims and maintained that the system was not defective. Both sides agreed to settle to avoid the risks and costs of continued litigation and to provide benefits to affected consumers.
