Current or former New Jersey residents who received a medical debt collection letter from Healthcare Revenue Recovery Group LLC between Dec. 2, 2014, and Dec. 2, 2015, may qualify to receive approximately $10.15 from a class action settlement.

Healthcare Revenue Recovery Group agreed to pay $500,000 to settle a class action lawsuit alleging it violated federal law by mailing collection letters in window envelopes that exposed a visible barcode. The plaintiff claimed a smartphone could scan this barcode to reveal an internal reference number and the first 10 characters of the recipient’s street address.

Who is a member of the Healthcare Revenue Recovery Group class?

Class members must meet all of the following criteria:

  • They resided in New Jersey.
  • They received one or more collection letters from Healthcare Revenue Recovery Group LLC.
  • The letter(s) were dated between Dec. 2, 2014, and Dec. 2, 2015.
  • The letter(s) sought to collect a consumer debt on behalf of the creditor EMER PHY ASSOC N JERSEY.
  • The letter(s) were sent in a window envelope, the barcode was visible from outside the envelope and the barcode could be scanned by a smartphone to reveal an internal reference number and the first 10 characters of the recipient's street address.

Records indicate there are approximately 49,121-49,252 class members.

How much is the debt collection letter payout?

Pro Rata Payment: Each class member who does not opt out will receive an equal share of the $500,000 settlement fund. The estimated payment per class member is about $10.15, but the final payment amount depends on the number of valid class members who remain in the settlement.

No claim form required

Class members do not need to file a claim to receive their payment. The settlement administrator already has the information necessary to identify class members.

The settlement administrator will mail checks to all eligible class members using the most recent address on file. Class members whose address has changed may contact the settlement administrator to update their details.

The settlement fund covers:

When is the debt collection letter payout date?

The settlement administrator will mail class member payments no later than 66 days after the court grants final approval of the settlement.

This class action lawsuit alleged Healthcare Revenue Recovery Group LLC violated the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act by sending collection letters in windowed envelopes that exposed a barcode. This barcode could be scanned to reveal sensitive information, including an internal reference number and part of the recipient’s street address.

HRRG denies any wrongdoing but agreed to settle to avoid the uncertainty, risk and expense of further litigation.
