About MediCopy

MediCopy is a health information management company that specializes in the release of information solutions. Founded in 2000, MediCopy works with healthcare providers, including hospitals, physician practices and clinics, to securely deliver protected health information to parties such as patients, insurers, attorneys and other providers.

In February 2022, MediCopy was acquired by MRO Corp., a leading clinical data acquisition and release platform. Following the acquisition, MediCopy became a division of MRO, integrating its team and operations while maintaining its focus on secure, compliant workflows for handling sensitive health data.

What Happened?

On Feb. 2, 2026, MediCopy notified Deaconess Health System that it had experienced a data security incident involving patient information related to release of information requests. An investigation revealed that an unauthorized actor accessed MediCopy's cloud-based file sharing platform and downloaded files on Jan. 13, 2026.

This breach did not affect Deaconess's own IT systems or electronic medical record system but was limited to certain patients whose records were processed by MediCopy.

The information exposed in this incident varied by individual but may have included highly sensitive data.

Information Exposed:

  • Names
  • Social Security numbers
  • Dates of birth
  • Medical record numbers
  • Dates of service
  • Health insurance identification numbers
  • Medical records

MediCopy and Deaconess have stated that only certain patients of Deaconess Henderson Hospital, Deaconess Union County Hospital and their surrounding clinics were affected, specifically those whose records were subject to a release of information request.
