Vista Del Mar Data Breach Compromises Health Information

Vista Del Mar Child and Family Services, a Los Angeles-based nonprofit that provides mental health, educational, adoption, foster care, residential care and family support services for children and families, disclosed a data breach that affected hundreds of individuals in the United States.

The organization disclosed the breach to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services on Aug. 29, 2026. Vista Del Mar also posted a notice about the incident on its website.

On June 30, 2026, Vista Del Mar identified suspicious activity within its computer network. The organization implemented its incident response protocols and took its network offline to help contain the situation. Vista Del Mar also brought in external cybersecurity experts to conduct an investigation into what occurred and whether any data may have been affected.

The investigation, which remains ongoing, determined that an unauthorized actor gained access to certain systems within the organization's computer network. Those systems contained files that may have included two categories of sensitive data: personal information and protected health information.

The specific types of personal information and protected health information that may have been exposed have not yet been fully identified.

Vista Del Mar Child and Family Services' response to the breach

Vista Del Mar stated that notification letters will be mailed to potentially impacted individuals once the review of the affected files has been completed. According to the company's notice, these letters will contain more detailed information about the incident. They will also include offers for complimentary credit monitoring and identity theft protection services, where appropriate, along with information about steps individuals can take to protect themselves.
