On June 16, 2025, Teamsters Local Unions 117, 174, and 763 discovered a major cyber incident that disrupted certain computer systems and resulted in unauthorized access to sensitive files. According to the notice filed with the Washington Attorney General’s office, an unauthorized third party gained access to files stored on the unions’ servers.

The breach affected a reported 124,703 individuals in Washington state. The information exposed includes names, dates of birth and Social Security numbers which are types of personally identifiable information (PII) that can be used for identity theft and fraud.

The breach was disclosed to the Washington Attorney General’s office on July 15, 2025. The unions have not publicly identified the threat actor or detailed the exact method of attack, but the fact that files were accessed on their servers suggests a compromise of internal systems, likely through unauthorized network access.

This type of exposure is considered severe because it involves highly sensitive PII that can be misused for financial fraud or identity theft.

The official disclosures can be reviewed on the Washington Attorney General's data breach portal:

Teamsters Local Unions' response

After discovering the breach, Teamsters Local Unions immediately took steps to secure their systems and engaged cybersecurity experts to investigate and remediate the incident. The unions have invested in new and improved hardware, enhanced their security and monitoring protocols, and are working to improve all facets of their cybersecurity posture.

Recognizing the sensitivity of the information involved, the unions are offering 12 months of free credit monitoring services to all affected individuals, regardless of union membership status. Current active members are also eligible for identity management and identity theft services through ID Resolution. Affected individuals are encouraged to call their respective union office to receive a unique code for enrolling in these services. For Local 174, the union office can be reached at 206-441-6060; for Local 117, call 1-888-872-3489.

Given the nature of the compromised information, those affected should remain vigilant by regularly reviewing account statements and obtaining free credit reports from each of the three major credit bureaus. Placing a fraud alert or credit freeze on credit files is also recommended to help prevent unauthorized activity. Any suspicious activity should be reported to the Federal Trade Commission at IdentityTheft.gov.
