On March 17, 2025, Home Telecom was informed of a third-party data security incident that involved unauthorized access to customer data. This incident affected not only Home Telecom but also other companies utilizing the same third-party vendor.

Upon investigation, the vendor confirmed on March 21, 2025, that personally identifiable information (PII) was exposed, including customer names, addresses, and Social Security numbers.

According to Home Telecom's disclosure filed with the South Carolina Attorney General's office on April 24, 2025, approximately 55,763 individuals in South Carolina have been affected by this data breach. This latest disclosure increased the number of people affected from their April 15th disclosure that said only 39,805 people were impacted.

Considering the sensitive nature of the information exposed, including Social Security numbers, affected individuals may face increased risks of identity theft and fraud.

Home Telecom's response

In response to the breach, Home Telecom has taken several actions to protect affected customers. The company has partnered with Cyberscout, a TransUnion company, to provide identity monitoring and protection services at no charge to affected individuals. These services include credit monitoring and proactive fraud assistance for a period of twelve months from the date of enrollment.

Affected customers can enroll in these complimentary identity protection services by visiting the Cyberscout enrollment page. Customers must enroll within 90 days from the date of the notification letter they received from Home Telecom. Enrollment requires an internet connection, an email account, and verification of personal information for identity confirmation.

Home Telecom has also provided detailed guidance on additional protective measures customers can take, including obtaining free credit reports, placing security freezes on credit files, and setting fraud alerts with the three major credit bureaus (Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion). For further assistance or questions regarding the breach, customers can contact Home Telecom directly at 833-998-8784, Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm EST, excluding holidays.

More information about the company and its services can be found on the Home Telecom website.

Protect Your Data

A breach notice means your personal details could be circulating far beyond the organization involved. One practical step is continuous monitoring: services such as Identity Defender (included with an ExpressVPN subscription) can automatically check dark-web markets, flag new credit-file activity, and request removal of your information from data-broker sites.

This kind of “early-warning system” can’t undo a breach, but it can help you spot misuse quickly and limit further exposure. ExpressVPN is offering 61% off, risk-free for 30 days, with ID Theft Insurance included and no extra cost for those who sign up for one or two years.
