
Greystar Real Estate Partners LLC, a Charleston, South Carolina-based real estate company that describes itself as the largest operator of apartments in the United States, disclosed a data breach that occurred in May 2026. The incident has so far impacted 333 Washington residents.
Between May 1, 2026, and May 18, 2026, an unauthorized third party accessed an employee email account and acquired certain files stored in that account, according to the company's notification to consumers. After identifying and containing the unauthorized activity, Greystar began an investigation with outside cybersecurity specialists.
The types of personal information exposed in the breach included names, Social Security numbers, driver's license or Washington ID card numbers, financial and banking information and full dates of birth.
The breach was disclosed to the attorneys general of Massachusetts and Washington on Aug. 27, 2026. The company also began mailing consumer notification letters on Aug. 27, 2026.
Greystar is offering affected individuals 24 months of complimentary credit monitoring and identity restoration services through Experian IdentityWorks.
To enroll, affected individuals must visit the Experian IdentityWorks enrollment page and enter the activation code included in their notification letter by Nov. 30, 2026. Activation codes will not work after that date.
