LPL Financial LLC, a financial services company that supports independent financial advisors and wealth management practices, disclosed a data breach that exposed sensitive personal and financial information.
The breach was disclosed to the Massachusetts Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation on Oct. 30, 2026. LPL Financial began notifying consumers on Oct. 29, 2026, through written notice.
On Aug. 19, 2026, LPL Financial detected suspicious activity on a financial advisor's LPL portal account, which maintained certain client data. The company's investigation determined that remote access software had been installed on the advisor's device as early as Aug. 11, 2026.
Remote access software allows an outside party to view and control a computer from another location. In this case, the software may have allowed an unauthorized person to access the advisor's LPL portal account and the client information it contained.
The types of personal information that may have been accessed without authorization included names, Social Security numbers, account numbers and types, contact information (addresses, phone numbers and email addresses), transaction history and account balances.
LPL Financial is offering affected individuals a complimentary 24-month membership to Experian IdentityWorks. Affected individuals can enroll online through Experian using the activation code included in their notification letter. The enrollment deadline is Jan. 31, 2027.
LPL Financial has set up a dedicated toll-free phone line at 833-918-1723, available Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Central time, excluding major U.S. holidays. Affected individuals can also contact the company's privacy response team by email at privacyresponseteam@lplfinancial.com.
