Florida Retina Center, a subspecialty eye practice in Bonita Springs, Florida, disclosed a data breach that affected 13,652 individuals in the United States.

On or about Jan. 30, 2026, Florida Retina Center detected that it was the target of a data security incident, according to the company's notification. An unauthorized third party attempted to infiltrate the practice's network environment.

Upon detecting the incident, the practice secured its network and engaged a specialized third-party forensic incident response firm. The firm was brought in to help secure the network environment and to determine the scope and extent of any potential unauthorized access to the practice's systems.

After an extensive investigation that concluded on May 19, 2026, Florida Retina Center determined that an unauthorized third party may have accessed or acquired certain personal information as a result of the incident.

The types of information potentially exposed in the breach included names, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, driver's license numbers and medical information.

The breach was disclosed to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services on May 11, 2026. Florida Retina Center posted a notice on its website on May 26, 2026, to alert individuals whose personal information may have been involved in the incident.

Florida Retina Center's response to the breach

Florida Retina Center is offering 12 months of complimentary credit monitoring and identity theft protection services to all potentially affected individuals. The practice recommends that individuals enroll in these services and follow the recommendations outlined in their notification letters to help ensure their information remains protected.

In addition to the substitute notice posted on its website, Florida Retina Center has sent notification letters to potentially impacted individuals. These letters include specific steps individuals can take to protect their information, along with enrollment details for the complimentary monitoring services.
