On Sept. 12, 2024, East Adams Rural Health (EARH) discovered suspicious activity within its network. An investigation was launched and on July 17, 2025 it was determined that a cybercriminal gained access to patient data between Sept. 7, 2024 and Sept. 13, 2024.
Exposed information may include names, addresses, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, health insurance information and medical information. East Adams Rural Healthcare published a data security incident notice on its website and affected individuals are being notified by mail.
The data breach was also disclosed to the Washington Attorney General's office on Aug. 11, 2025 and the Massachusetts Attorney General on Aug. 12, 2025. The total number of affected individuals has not been released, but includes at least 8,896 Washington residents and one in Massachusetts.
For those who may be affected, EARH has set up a dedicated toll-free response line at 866-651-4242, available Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Central Time (excluding major U.S. holidays). Individuals are encouraged to call if they have questions or wish to determine if they were impacted.
Given the types of information exposed, EARH recommends that patients and employees remain vigilant by regularly reviewing financial account statements for any suspicious activity. It is also important to check explanation of benefits statements from health insurance providers and promptly investigate any unfamiliar items. Taking these steps can help detect and mitigate potential misuse of your information.

A breach notice means your personal details could be circulating far beyond the organization involved. One practical step is continuous monitoring: services such as Identity Defender (included with an ExpressVPN subscription) can automatically check dark-web markets, flag new credit-file activity, and request removal of your information from data-broker sites.
This kind of “early-warning system” can’t undo a breach, but it can help you spot misuse quickly and limit further exposure. ExpressVPN is offering 61% off, risk-free for 30 days, with ID Theft Insurance included and no extra cost for those who sign up for one or two years.
