Dermatology Treatment and Research Center experienced a data breach impacted both personally identifiable information (PII) and protected health information (PHI). On Feb. 26, 2025, the practice and its management company, DermCare Management, discovered suspicious activity on their computer systems.

On March 3, 2025, an investigation determined that an unauthorized actor gained access and may have copied certain patient data from the network. Compromised information could include names, Social Security numbers, driver's license numbers, medical records, health insurance details and financial account information.

The number of impacted patients has not been released. Dermatology Treatment and Research Center published an updated Notice of Data Security Event on its website on May 13, 2025. The exposure of this type of patient information puts thousands of patients at risk for identity theft and other forms of fraud.

Dermatology treatment and Research Center's response

In response to the breach, Dermatology Treatment and Research Center secured its network and launched an investigation. Impacted individuals will be notified by mail.

If you receive a data breach notice from Dermatology Treatment and Research Center or DermCare Management, you may want to:

  • Sign up for the free credit monitoring services, if offered.
  • Monitor your credit reports and financial accounts for any unusual activity.
  • Be alert for phishing emails or phone calls that may use your exposed information.
  • Consider placing a fraud alert or credit freeze with major credit bureaus.

DermCare Management has established a dedicated assistance line for affected individuals at 833-998-7517, Monday through Friday from 9am to 5pm EST.

More information about the medical practice can be found on the Dermatology Treatment and Research Center website.

Protect Your Data

A breach notice means your personal details could be circulating far beyond the organization involved. One practical step is continuous monitoring: services such as Identity Defender (included with an ExpressVPN subscription) can automatically check dark-web markets, flag new credit-file activity, and request removal of your information from data-broker sites.

This kind of “early-warning system” can’t undo a breach, but it can help you spot misuse quickly and limit further exposure. ExpressVPN is offering 61% off, risk-free for 30 days, with ID Theft Insurance included and no extra cost for those who sign up for one or two years.
