Students who were enrolled in a school in Illinois and had a Google Workspace for Education or G Suite for Education account with a voice or face model created, or had Voice Match or Face Match enabled, at any time between March 26, 2015, and May 15, 2025, may qualify to claim an estimated $30 to $100 from a class action settlement.

Google LLC agreed to pay $8.75 million to settle a class action lawsuit alleging it collected and stored the biometric data of certain Illinois students through its education platforms without proper notice or consent and in violation of state law.

Who can file a Google claim?

Class members meet all of the following criteria:

  • They were enrolled in a school located in Illinois at any time between March 26, 2015, and May 15, 2025.
  • They were residents of Illinois during that period.
  • They had a voice model or face model created, or had the Voice Match or Face Match feature enabled, in their Google Workspace for Education or G Suite for Education account while enrolled.

Both minors and adults are eligible. For minors, a parent or guardian must complete the claim form on their behalf and use the funds solely for the benefit of the minor. Each eligible person may submit only one claim; duplicate claims will be rejected.

How much is the BIPA payout?

Each eligible class member who submits a valid claim will receive an equal payment from the net settlement fund. The estimated payment per claim is between $30 and $100, but the actual amount will depend on the number of valid claims submitted and deductions for court-approved fees and costs.

Class members can file a claim online or download, print and complete the PDF claim form and mail it to the settlement administrator. To receive a payment, eligible class members must submit a claim form by Oct. 16, 2025.

Why did this class action settlement happen?

The class action lawsuit alleged Google collected and stored biometric data (such as face or voice models) of Illinois students through its education platforms without providing proper notice or obtaining required consent as mandated by the Illinois Biometric Information Privacy Act.

Google denies all allegations and any liability but agreed to settle the case to avoid the risks and costs of continued litigation.
