What was the September Ransomware Attack?
On September 4, 2024, Weiser Memorial Hospital discovered unusual activity on its network. The hospital immediately took steps to secure its systems and brought in cybersecurity experts to investigate. It was determined that certain hospital data may have been acquired without authorization on or about that date. The incident was later linked to a ransomware attack by a group known as EMBARGO, which claimed to have obtained 200 GB of the hospital’s data and threatened to publish it.

After a thorough review, the hospital concluded on April 21, 2025, that sensitive information belonging to current and former patients may have been involved. Notices were mailed to affected individuals starting May 12, 2025. In total, 34,249 people in the United States were affected, including residents in Texas (438), Maine (14), and Montana (251).
