The Computer Merchant Ltd. (TCM) is an information technology staffing and services firm based in Norwell, Massachusetts. Founded in 1980, TCM provides IT and software engineering workforce solutions to Fortune 1000 companies, public sector agencies and mid-sized businesses across the United States.

TCM is one of the largest privately held IT staffing companies in the country, placing more than 10,000 consultants annually and maintaining a network of over nine million professionals. The company’s services include IT staffing, application development, infrastructure management, help desk support and technology deployments.

What happened?

In July 2024, The Computer Merchant discovered a cyberattack that targeted its computer network. Initially, their investigation did not find evidence that personal information had been acquired by an unauthorized party. However, in January 2025, TCM learned that stolen data from the incident may have been made publicly available.

In May 2025, a review determined that sensitive information of 34,127 individuals had been exposed. TCM began notifying affected individuals by mail on Aug. 19, 2025.

Information Exposed

  • Social Security number
  • Possibly other personal information such as contact details, driver's license number and financial information

The data breach was disclosed to the Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and California Attorneys General on Aug. 21, 2025. The breach was also reported to the Texas Attorney General's office on Aug. 22, 2025.

Impacted individuals include 4,057 in Massachusetts, 2,981 in Texas, 433 Rhode Island residents, 366 in New Hampshire and 261 in Maine.
