On May 21, 2025, the Brien Center discovered suspicious activity in its network, revealing that an unauthorized third party had gained access to certain systems. The investigation, which involved third-party cybersecurity specialists, determined that the breach occurred between May 19 and May 21, 2025. During this time, the attacker may have accessed and acquired sensitive data belonging to clients.

The Brien Center reported the breach to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services on July 18, 2025, and to the Vermont Attorney General’s office on July 21, 2025. According to reports, a total of 5,427 individuals in the United States were affected.
