Steel Encounters Inc. is an employee-owned specialty contractor based in Salt Lake City, Utah. Founded in 1985, the company focuses on building facades and structural steel materials for commercial construction projects.

Steel Encounters operates through two main divisions: the Architectural Division, which handles glass curtain wall systems, cladding, storefronts and skylights, and the Structural Division, which supplies steel joist and deck materials along with related services.

What Happened?

Between July 27, 2025 and Aug. 1, 2025, Steel Encounters detected suspicious activity on its network. An investigation revealed that an unauthorized actor gained access to and copied information from certain systems. The company completed a preliminary review of the impacted data by Nov. 7, 2025, and later finished a more detailed review to identify affected individuals.

On Dec. 31, 2025, Steel Encounters reported the breach to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. According to the company, the breach affected 959 people in the United States. The Akira ransomware group claimed responsibility for the attack and posted about it on the dark web on Aug. 20, 2025, stating they obtained 21 GB of data, including financial, employee and customer information.
