St. James Place of Baton Rouge is a continuing care retirement community located in Louisiana. Established in 1983, St. James Place has been a prominent provider of senior living services for more than 30 years.

What Happened?

On Aug. 2, 2024, St. James Place discovered a disruption to its network systems.

The organization took steps to secure its systems and brought in independent forensic specialists to investigate. The investigation revealed that unauthorized activity occurred from July 30, 2024, through Aug. 2, 2024. During this period, certain data was accessed by an unauthorized actor.

It was later determined that a ransomware group known as Cloak claimed responsibility for the attack, stating they obtained 100 GB of data. The breach was posted on the Tor network, with sample screenshots provided as evidence.

The compromised data varied by individual, but may have included:

Information Exposed:

  • Names
  • Social Security numbers
  • Driver’s license or state identification numbers
  • Passport numbers
  • Financial account information
  • Payment card information
  • Dates of birth
  • Medical treatment and diagnostic information
  • Health insurance information

St. James began notifying affected individuals by mail as early as March 2, 2026. Additional notifications were sent on May 4, 2026, as more addresses were identified.
