What Happened?
In October 2024, Southern Arkansas University Tech discovered suspicious activity on its computer systems. After launching an internal investigation and working with independent cybersecurity specialists, it was determined that an unauthorized user gained access to SAU Tech’s systems. The investigation revealed that files containing personal information may have been copied while the attacker was present.
The breach was reported to law enforcement and disclosed to the Maine Attorney General’s office on May 1, 2025. SAU Tech notified affected individuals in writing on April 29, 2025.
The ransomware group RansomHub claimed responsibility for the attack, stating they obtained 252 GB of data and threatened to publish it on the dark web. SAU Tech responded by resetting passwords, deploying new security monitoring, and offering identity protection services to those affected.
