What happened?

In April 2025, Sheheen, Hancock & Godwin LLP experienced a cyberattack. On May 19, 2025, the company determined that an unauthorized actor had copied and/or downloaded files from their internal network on April 8, 2025.

The incident was later linked to the LYNX ransomware group, which claimed to have obtained 10 GB of the firm’s data and posted about the hack on the dark web on April 25, 2025. The total number of impacted individuals has not been release but is believed to include several thousand from multiple states.

Sheheen, Hancock & Godwin mailed notices to affected people on Sept. 25, 2025. The firm also posted a Notice of Data Security Incident on its own website on the same day.

The breach was officially disclosed to state authorities in Texas, Maine, Massachusetts, Montana, Vermont and New Hampshire beginning on Sept. 25, 2025. Impacted individuals includes 416 Texas residents, 56 in Massachusetts, 49 in Maine, 19 New Hampshire residents and 15 in Montana.
