What Happened?
A ransomware group known as Akira claimed responsibility for a cyberattack on ETC Companies. The breach was posted to the dark web on Oct. 2, 2024.
According to the group, they accessed approximately 10 GB of the company’s data, including Social Security numbers, passports, driver’s licenses, birth certificates, non-disclosure agreements, contracts and detailed financial records.
On March 5, 2026, ETC Companies disclosed the breach to the Massachusetts Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation.
It is important to note that the official disclosure dates the breach as occurring sometime in Oct. 2025. The reason for this discrepancy is unclear and may stem from incorrect dating or the possibility of multiple breaches.
The breach affected at least four individuals in Massachusetts so far.
