What Happened?
Pacific Railway Enterprises fell victim to a ransomware attack by a group known as Akira on Nov. 26, 2025. The hackers posted on the dark web claiming to have obtained corporate data, including employee lists, personal information, NDAs, contracts, agreements and project details.
Shortly after, PRE notified affected individuals and authorities. On Dec. 30, 2025, PRE disclosed the breach to the Massachusetts Attorney General’s office, reporting that at least one individual in Massachusetts was affected
The company stated that sensitive information was exposed, including:
- Social Security numbers
- Credit card numbers

If you received a notice from PRE or believe your information may have been involved, there are important steps you can take:
- PRE is offering complimentary single-bureau credit monitoring and identity protection services for 24 months through Cyberscout. Affected individuals should enroll within 90 days of receiving the letter to take advantage of these services.
- Monitor your account statements and credit reports for suspicious activity. You are entitled to one free credit report annually from each of the three major credit bureaus.
- Consider placing a fraud alert or security freeze on your credit file to help prevent unauthorized credit activity. Fraud alerts are free and last one year, while credit freezes restrict access to your credit report.
- If you notice any suspicious activity, promptly contact your financial institution and report any suspected identity theft to law enforcement and the Federal Trade Commission.
