In early May 2025, Optima Tax Relief experienced a cyberattack. The company discovered unusual activity on its network on May 1, 2025, and discovered that an unauthorized actor accessed the network between May 1 and May 6, 2025, and downloaded copies of certain files.
The hacking group "CHAOS" claimed responsibility posted about the attack on the dark web on June 6, 2025, stating that 69 GB of data was obtained. On July 9, 2025, Optima Tax Relief determined that the compromised files included sensitive personal and financial information.
Optima Tax Relief reported the data breach to the Texas and California Attorney Generals' offices on Aug. 15, 2025. The company is notifying affected individuals by mail.
