What Happened?

North Shore University Hospital Sleep Disorders Center experienced a major privacy incident affecting 13,332 individuals. The Nassau County District Attorney’s Office charged a former employee with crimes related to unlawful surveillance.

According to official statements, the employee secretly video recorded individuals in the restrooms at the Center using a hidden camera disguised as a smoke detector. According to law enforcement the perpetrator purchased the recording device on August 2, 2022 and used it during his shifts, attaching and removing it to access the video footage.

North Shore Hospital notified impacted individuals on May 22, 2025. The privacy incident was reported to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services on May 23, 2025.

  • The device was placed in restrooms and attached using Velcro, then removed at the end of shifts.
