There are several steps affected individuals can take:

- Consider placing a one-year fraud alert on credit files. This tells creditors to contact the individual before opening new accounts.
- Place a security freeze on credit files to prevent new credit from being issued without express authorization.
- Obtain a free credit report from each major credit bureau and review for any unauthorized activity.
- Stay vigilant by regularly checking account statements and credit reports for suspicious activity.
- If any signs of identity theft are noticed, file a police report and contact the Federal Trade Commission for guidance.
