What happened?
In early September 2025, MetroWest Community Federal Credit Union experienced a significant data breach. On Sept. 1, 2025, the credit union received alerts for suspicious activity on its network. By Sept. 3, 2025, an investigation with third-party forensic specialists determined that unauthorized access had occurred and certain files were copied without permission.
The breach was linked to a ransomware attack by a group known as Akira, which claimed to have obtained client documents, financial and accounting information, and employee personal files. The stolen data was posted on a dark web network in October 2025. So far, the breach has impacted residents of Massachusetts (7,573) and Rhode Island (65).
