The company began an investigation with the help of external cybersecurity professionals. After a thorough forensic review, Highmark Companies confirmed on March 30, 2026, that the breach had exposed sensitive information belonging to individuals connected to the company.
The incident was the result of a ransomware attack by a group known as PLAY, which claimed to have accessed organizational data and threatened to publish it on the dark web.
The data breach was publicly disclosed on April 24, 2026.
